Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and Xian University of Technology discussed the possibility of creating a joint Russian-Chinese institute. With the support of the SPbPU official Representative Office in Shanghai, negotiations between representatives of SPbPU and Xian University of Technology were held at the Xi’an university site in mid-January. Polytechnic University was represented by the head of the SPbPU International Education Office Evgeniya Satalkina and the head of the Department of International Educational Programs and Academic Mobility Olga Emelyanova; the Vice-Rector for International Affairs of Xian University of Technology Liu BO and the dean of the School of International Education Xue HONG took part in the negotiations.
The prospects for establishing a joint institute became quite clear last summer: then, on the basis of SPbPU, a joint TU Xi’an-Polytech international center for internships began its work. Thanks to its operation, about 50 graduate students from Xian University had taken training at Polytechnic University. Very soon, new students will come to SPbPU to study materials science. Given the success of cooperation in Russia, the negotiators discussed the possibility of establishing an educational center based at the Chinese university.
“The cooperation between SPbPU and Xian University of Technology is developing at a good pace,” commented Evgeniya Satalkina; “for us, it is very important that our universities are getting more and more points of interaction, and all our agreements have been confirmed by real and timely actions.”
It is planned that the future joint institute will implement educational programs in such areas as optoelectronics, information technology and automation, mechanical engineering and materials science. The parties identified optoelectronics and materials science as the key areas.
“Such projects are very important for both countries. The creation of the Russian-Chinese Institute will facilitate the development of various types of joint programs, as well as scientific cooperation,” said Olga Emelyanova.
The next meeting on the project is scheduled for May 2020 with participation of the coordinators of educational programs in the selected areas of training.
