Polytechnic University develops cooperation with universities in Taiwan

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and the Representative Office in Moscow for the Taipei-Moscow Economic and Cultural Coordination Commission (Taiwan) held online talks. The parties discussed opportunities for establishing new scientific and technological exchanges and developing partnerships between scientific and research organizations in Taiwan and SPbPU.

Director of the Department of Science and Technology, Professor of National Taiwan University of Science & Technology Song-Jeng, Isaac, Huang on behalf of the Representative Office in Moscow for the Taipei-Moscow Economic and Cultural Coordination Commission (hereinafter - TMC) attended the negotiations. SPbPU was represented by Mr. Oleg Rozhdestvensky, Head of Directorate of the World-Class Research Center (WCRC) «Advanced Digital Technologies»; Mr. Vyacheslav P. Shkodyrev, Director of School of Cyber-Physical Systems and Control; Mr. Sergey Antonov, Head of Department of International Scientific and External Economic Relations; Associate Professor Anton Naumov, Deputy Director for International Activities at Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport and Mr. Alexander Kanapin, Research Associate at the Digital Technologies for Agrobiology Research Laboratory.

The key topics of the talks were smart manufacturing, digital technologies in biomedical systems, artificial intelligence, and next-generation materials. Speaking about the prospects for cooperation in these areas, Dr. Song-Jeng, Isaac, Huang, Director of the Science and Technology Department of TMС, made a special emphasis on the examples of successful projects carried out within the framework of joint contests of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan and Russian foundations (Russian Science and Technology Foundation and Russian Foundation for Basic Research). Separately, Dr. Huang presented the main directions of scientific and innovative activities of Taiwan, in particular, microelectronics and smart health care, as well as programs for masters, graduate students, and young scientists, among which are internship programs in national applied research laboratories of Taiwan.

Of particular interest to the Taiwanese side were the WCRC’s areas of work in Advanced Digital Technologies, in particular, the COVID-19 digital proliferation modeling project, the center’s projects to create the KAMA-1 electric car, and the development of digital twins. They were presented by Mr. Oleg Rozhdeshevsky, Head of the WCRC Directorate.

Colleagues from Taiwan discussed the topic of smart robots with Vyacheslav Shkodyrev, Director of the School of Applied Industrial Problems. Vyacheslav presented the scientific potential of VSKFSiU and the main fundamental mathematical models and approaches used at the school, which are the basis for the implementation of applied industrial problems. Among such problems is management under uncertainty of transport systems of urban infrastructure, optimization of management of industrial enterprises, for example, power plants, including prediction of emergencies, and management of robotic production lines.

Associate Professor Anton Naumov paid special attention to the joint project with the National Chung Cheng University (Taiwan), which is planned to be implemented within the grant of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan and the Russian Science Foundation. Also, Anton spoke about the main research topics in the field of new materials and additive technologies of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transportation, among which there were mentioned powder materials for additive manufacturing, various technologies of additive manufacturing, metal matrix composites, special optical materials, materials for nano- and microelectronics, atomic layer deposition and lithium-ion batteries.

Alexander Kanapin, a researcher of the Research Laboratory for Digital Technologies for Agrobiology, presented to his colleagues the scientific potential of the new Digital Technologies for Agrobiology laboratory, which was recently opened at SPbPU.  This computational biology center was created to implement large-scale projects both in fundamental research and for creating infrastructure solutions for processing, analysis, and storage of omics data in biomedicine and other areas of life sciences. The laboratory's specialists have extensive experience in collaborating with leading Russian and foreign scientific centers. As an example, Alexander Canapin mentioned research projects in the field of onco-immunology and vaccine development, which are implemented together with Oxford University, agro-genomics, and precision medicine, in particular the ecosystem of big medical genetic data, which is developed in partnership with the Tomsk National Research Medical Center RAS, the Institute of General Genetics RAS and Genetiko company.

As a result of the talks, the parties agreed to organize bilateral workshops in selected research areas, and also agreed to consider prospects for scientific exchanges between researchers of Taiwan and SPbPU universities and internships for students and postgraduates of Polytechnic University in Taiwan laboratories. In addition, Dr. Sun-Jen Huang expressed his interest in expanding cooperation with WCRC Advanced Digital Technology by involving leading universities in Taiwan, such as National Tsing Hua University and National TaiwanUniversity of Science & Technology.
