The international learning platform Coursera has launched the ‘Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL): B1’ course to help foreign citizens to prepare for the test and pass an international examination in the Russian Language.

Online course consists of six modules that features video lectures and practical lessons including tests, listening comprehension, written and conversational tasks. For convenience, all lectures are in English with subtitles.  The developers paid special attention to the practical component. The students can perform the tasks that are similar in structure to the examination tasks. This helps them to test their knowledge before the examination. The course was developed by the experts at the Language Testing Centre at St Petersburg University in collaboration with the University Centre of E-learning Development in response to multiple requests from students and teachers, whose recommendations and wishes were taken into account.

Those who are ready to take the certification examination can take the test at St Petersburg University either in person or online. More information can be found at the Language Testing Centre at St Petersburg University website or by e-mail test.language@spbu.ru. The first certification level (TORFL-I/B1)

Upon passing the first level examination, the student receives a relevant certificate confirming a general command of Russian as a foreign language and ability to communicate in everyday public, social and cultural spheres. This level provides for successful communication in the Russian-language environment including work, studies and recreation. International applicants require the first level certificate of proficiency in Russia to study in a Russian university.

In terms of the content volume with over 140 online courses and over 10 specialisations, St Petersburg University is among the top three organisations worldwide, whose online courses are represented at the international learning platform Coursera. The general number of students attending St Petersburg University online courses exceeds 2.5 million people.

Lectures of the ‘Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL): B1’ online course are in open access and anyone can take the course for free after registering at the Coursera platform.
