Unique master’s programme in Research Journalism

This master's programme in Research Journalism is unique to the higher educational practice in Russia in that it offers a special approach to the training of qualified specialists. Applicants who have an undergraduate degree in journalism will be able to receive new experience and deepen previously acquired knowledge. For those who have an undergraduate degree in other fields, the programme provides an opportunity to master the fundamental principles of best practice, and the technologies of investigative journalism and research activities in the media.

In modern media, there is a demand for specialists who have knowledge of social analysis algorithms and research skills in various areas of public life. The new academic programme provides an opportunity to study thematic courses that help to master such qualifications as: Research Journalism as a Field of Expertise; Psychology of Research Journalism; Intercultural Communications; Popular Science Journalism; and others. The multidisciplinary nature of the programme makes it possible to cover, in relation to journalism, the issues of: political science and sociology; psychology and cultural studies; and design and social communications. Such a variety of subject areas will help master’s students to acquire the creative methods of journalistic work – both the traditional and the cutting-edge ones. The teaching staff includes well-known scholars, educators and recognised specialists with extensive practical experience. This is a full-time programme, and there will be scholarship and paid tuition places.

During the training, master’s students together with their lecturers will carry out research and practical projects. They will have an opportunity to acquire and master their key skills at the departments of St Petersburg University and in cooperation with foreign partner universities, including: the Free University of Berlin (Germany); Volda University College (Norway); Beijing International Studies University (China); Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (Poland); the University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland); and others.

Students will be engaged in individual practical work in: the editorial offices of the media; news agencies; print and network publications; and television and radio companies. This work will serve as a good basis for future career growth. The acquired knowledge and competencies will make it possible for graduates to become highly sought-after specialists in the media industry, or to work in related communication fields.
