St. Petersburg universities have strengthened their positions in the ARWU 2020 global rankings

St. Petersburg universities have strengthened their positions in the ARWU 2020 rankings, published on 15 August: St. Petersburg State University held its position in the 301–400 group while ITMO University entered the 901–1000 group (previously in 801–900). The Higher School of Economics, which has a branch in St. Petersburg, also entered the 801–900 group from 901–1000. All St. Petersburg universities which already appeared in the ARWU rankings stayed on the board.

New data shows that in recent years, Russian universities on the whole have strengthened their positions – 11 Russian universities appear on the updated ranking. The best positions among Russian universities were taken by Moscow State University in 93rd place (87th in 2019), St. Petersburg State University in the 301–400 group (no change), Moscow Institute of Physics & Technology in the 401–500 group (no change), Novosibirsk State University in the 501–600 group (previously 401–500) and National Research Nuclear University MEPhI in the 701–800 group (previously 601–700).
